Kiteboarding and wingfoiling can be practised safely with a little forethought and common sense. Safe, responsible practices minimise negative attention to the sport and help protect its future. KWA believes the use of safety devices such as PFDs is a matter for individual judgement, depending on conditions and experience. For example, a PFD and flares may be appropriate when riding any considerable distance offshore, but less necessary for inshore or river-based sessions. Below are the legal requirements for safety equipment when kiteboarding or wingfoiling in Western Australia.

- Consider possible changes

Look
- Before you launch, land, jump, jibe, etc
Equipment
- Always pre-flight check
- Use a safety leash
- Use a quick release on anything you hook into
- Practice using your safety systems regularly so that it becomes instinctive
- Never exceed manufacturers specifications
Attitude
- Always seek and listen to local advice
- Don’t exceed your limitations
- Use judgement to prevent situations, not rely on skill to try and get out of it

- Others – be considerate and courteous to all other water and beach users
- The law
- Fellow kiters and wingfoilers – follow right of way rules
