Right of Way Rules
The following Right of Way guidelines should be followed when kiteboarding or wingfoiling:
- There is no absolute right of way — all riders should take whatever action is necessary to avoid a collision.
- When two riders are on opposite tacks, the port tack rider must alter course and/or kite position to keep clear of the starboard tack rider, who should maintain their course and speed.
- When two or more riders are on the same tack with overlapping kite lines, the upwind rider(s) should keep their kite high, while the downwind rider(s) keep theirs low.
- When two riders are on the same tack but not overlapped, the trailing rider must ensure the rider ahead is aware of their approach.
- Never deliberately manoeuvre into a right-of-way position in a way that interferes with another water user. If you’re behind another kite heading toward the beach, turn early to give the lead rider plenty of room. Always check for other water users before water-starting, jibing, relaunching a kite, or recovering a board.
- Do not jump if there’s any risk of colliding with another rider.
- When wave riding, the first rider on the face of a wave has right of way — this may override the starboard tack rule.
- All riders must be aware of and comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws. Rules vary by location, so always check what applies at your local spot.
